Is there any sensible way to play these? So you can get a decent check every 3 months?

I always thought investing in a stable stock with a decent dividend was a good idea. No?

That's a pretty wise strategy for long-term investing, actually. Make sure to have your account set up to automatically reinvest dividends and it'll all start to add up. That's the general thinking I use for my IRA and for an account I opened for my neice when she was born -- regular automatic investing and full reinvestment of all dividends.

Phillip Morris goes by the name Altria now, trying to distance themselves from any association with cigarettes, but they still pay the nice dividend. If you're a short-term stock watcher, though, it might be a good idea to hold off purchasing for a a few weeks. There's a possible head-and-shoulders pattern finishing on the chart right now, so a person bothered by a price dip right after purchase may do well to wait.

If you're planning on holding for a decade or so, short-term fluctuation doesn't matter much, though.
